First tekom event in Istanbul

The first tekom event in Turkey was conducted on Tuesday, 5 April 2011 at the Dogus University in Istanbul with around 30 participants and could be concluded successfully with the establishment of an initiative group.

5 April 2011, Istanbul. After a warm welcome by Dr Isin Bengi-Öner, President of diye Global Communications, who actively supported the organization of this event, Dr Michael Fritz, Managing Director, tekom presented the professional association as well as the profession of technical writing and its career perspectives to the participants. Peter Oehmig, regional group representative in the extended executive board of tekom impressed the participants with interactive presentations on the topics of translation management and terminology work including tips for practical application in daily work.

This was followed by several Turkish speakers providing insights in technical documentation in Turkey from the scientific and commercial perspective. Dr Ayfer Altay, Head of the department for translation and interpretation at the Hacettepe Univerity provided information about developments at the academic level. Mr. Tolga Secilmis, Marketing Manager at Es Bilgisayar, and Dr Isin Bengi-Öner, President of diye spoke about their experiences while working in this field as well as the weaknesses, strengths and opportunities for technical documentation in Turkey. The situation of technical documentation in Turkey was discussed after the presentations and an initiative group was founded. Those present were highly interested in engaging as part of an initiative group for further tekom events and working towards starting a country group “tekom Türkiye”.

The university teachers from seven different universities and with different technical and/or language science background who attended the event evinced great interest with respect to the development of their own training courses.  tekom supports these efforts of developing an active network consisting of companies, students and university teachers and promoting the field of technical documentation.

On 4 April 2011, tekom was able to have an exchange with Turkish students of translation as part of a meeting with TÜCEB, an association of translation students in Turkey. The Türkiye Çeviri Ögrencileri Birligi (TÜCEB) is an initiative of translation students for translation students with over 1300 members. tekom informed the representatives of TÜCEB about the professional association, its activities and the professional perspectives in technical communication in an informal atmosphere.
