tekom Romania event report

Graphic Design and Tools for Technical Writers

The second tekom Romania event for 2014, on the topic of ”Graphic Design and Tools for Technical Writers”, took place on the 9th of May in Bucharest and was a half-day workshop held by our guest speaker Dirk Schmitz.

The second tekom Romania event of this year took place on the 9th of May in a fancy location, namely the  “I.L. Caragiale” Hall of the Hotel Ramada Majestic, in the very heart of downtown Bucharest. It was a workshop entitled "Graphic Design and Tools for Technical Writers" and was tailored according to the needs of professionals in technical writing.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Voichita Ghenghea, head of tekom Romania’s Initiative Committee, opened the event with an introductory speech and a brief overview of the agenda and wished a warm welcome to the participants; thereafter she introduced the referent, Dirk Schmitz, our German guest, Technical Illustrator at tecteam GmbH in Dortmund with a long career in graphic design for technical documentation. In 1998 he became associate professor at the tecteam Institute, where he teaches “Visualization Basics”, “Instructing with Images”, “Graphic Software in Technical Documentation” and “Adobe illustrator”. Since 2011 he is also a graphics expert at tekom Germany.

The workshop, a half-day event, was meant for entry level and was structured in three parts: Graphics in Technical Documentation (An Overview); How to Communicate with Graphics? And Hands-on Examples.

In the beginning the speaker talked about texts and images as main information carriers in technical communication, complementing and supporting each other. This first part of the workshop aimed at creating a basis for a common understanding of the topic, covering symbols, images and visual conventions.

In the second part the referent addressed the human visual perception and image processing. Perspectives, representation methods and stylistic elements were presented together with design and teaching principles in a very clear way.

The third part of the workshop was dedicated to examples and exercises, which offered the audience a broad insight into the “craft” of graphic design in technical documentation.

It was a very interesting and interactive presentation, which offered the participants the possibility to interact with the referent, raise questions and express opinions. There was also time enough left for networking during the break and after the event.

The Initiative Committee of tekom Romania wants to once again thank our referent Dirk Schmitz for his professional and enthusiastic presentation, as well as all the participants for their interest in this event and would be very pleased to welcome everybody to our next important event in fall, namely the TC Europe Roadshow, which will stop in Bucharest on September 24th.
