tekom Europe Going East: ETC Conference in Sofia

Anke Mecklenbrauck

For the third year in a row, tekom Europe has joined the Evolution of Technical Communication conference (ETC) in Sofia, Bulgaria. The conference is organized by the Bulgarian community of technical writers. It was focused mainly on software documentation with presentations from local and international speakers and nearly 80 participants.

According to the organizers the goal of this event is to educate ourselves, to share news and ideas and to grow the professionalism in the area of technical communication in Bulgaria. tekom Europe was acting as a partner of the Opens external link in new windowconference and contributed with two presentations. One of them was delivered by the CEO of tekom Europe, Dr. Michael Fritz, who was giving a talk on „Technical Communication as a Business in Europe“, where he demonstrated that technical writing is much more than „just writing“ – it’s a business itself with many opportunities for all professionals working in that field.

Dr. Stefan Dierssen
spoke to the audience about mobile documentation and its added value for technical documentation. While presenting an overview about the different concepts and available tools, he also addressed the challenges for an efficient and fast implementation. He then introduced the tekom guideline for mobile documentation as a tool by which people can setup a concept and plan the implementation step by step without neglecting any important aspect. At the end, three lucky conference participants won a copy of the guideline in a raffle.

Apart from the professional presentations, the community was highly interested in the activities of tekom Europe as an association. They feel that there is a need for such a professional association in Bulgaria who can tackle the challenges such as establishing further education and training for technical writers, creating awareness for the profession and having more opportunities for exchange with technical writers also from outside their country.

The conference day was concluded with a dinner in a traditional Bulgarian restaurant, where we had the chance to get to know each other better and enjoy the Bulgarian hospitality. It can be said that this conference marked another milestone in the relationship between tekom Europe and the Bulgarian community and we are looking forward to future activities.
