International, Varied and Well-Visited:

The tcworld conference 2014 in Stuttgart

Kiriaki Kampouridou

From November 11-13, the tcworld conference 2014 and tekom fair welcomed about 4100 participants and fair visitors from all over the world at the new venue at the ICS International Congress Center in Stuttgart. It thus confirms its position as the leading global event and marketplace for technical communication.

The team of tekom and of tcworld is pleased that the event ran successfully at the new venue in Stuttgart. At the tcworld conference, visitors could discover a broad and deep range of topics in the field of technical communication, from DITA and user assistance to content management and mobile documentation, as well as to localization and language technology. The appeal of the conference program lied not only in its quality but in its quantity as well: 250 speakers (70 of them with an international background) showed the current trends in technical communication with 180 presentations in total, 65 workshops and tutorials (75 presentations and workshops in English).

The tekom fair: international and cross-industrial

Besides visiting the conference, there was also enough time to take a look at the tekom fair with its 108 exhibitors from Germany and 80 exhibitors with an international background, representing a variety of fields and industries.

International standards have a greater and greater influence on technical communication, mainly because of the export of German goods. Thus, manufacturers have a greater need for translation and localization of product information. This trend is reflected in the tekom fair as well, where many translation providers and providers of language and translation technology exhibited. Further, many international organizations of the industry and trade associations – mostly in the field of translation – presented themselves at the Associations World.

Another focus at the tekom fair was the creation of technical information adapted to the development and production of technical goods. Among these information products are, for example, user manuals and instruction books, spare parts catalogs, training material and online help for software. More and more, companies are focusing on apps over instruction, to support the buyer with further information. New perspectives are developing in the field of virtual reality as well. Information related to component parts or different repair steps are shown with the help of a pair of data goggles or a tablet.

Social program and next event

Besides the diversified conference program and the large fair, visitors benefitted from the many occasions in the meantime for networking and exchange with their peers. Of course, the visitors’ well-being was also ensured! With the exciting social program, there was no chance for boredom.
At the tekom Welcome to Stuttgart Party, participants celebrated the opening of the tcworld conference 2014 as well as the winners of the tekom doku award (honoring successful instruction manuals and online help tools) and the winners of the intro award, the innovation prize in technical documentation for students.

The next tcworld conference will take place on November 10 -12, 2015 at the same venue, at the ICS in Stuttgart.
