New Guidance Document for the Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU

Claudia Klumpp

Within the framework of the Alignment Package, a revised version of the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) was released in 2014. In November 2016, the European Commission published the guideline "Guidelines on the application of the directive" in English. It comments on and explains the requirements of the directive.

The directive covers a wide range of consumer and professional products, e.g. household appliances, cables, power supply units, laser equipment and components such as fuses. Thus, it is of great importance. You can download the "Guidelines on the application of the directive" here.
Until now, only one Guidance Document related to the transition from the old Low Voltage Directive 2006/95/EC to the revised version has been provided on the website of the European Commission. This document contains FAQs and deals with the following questions, such as:

  • May documents remain in English only if the relevant products are most likely to be used by professionals?
  • What happens if a product is placed on the market for which the manufacturer has provided no translation?
  • What happens with bad translations?

This document is not replaced by the new guideline and is therefore recommended reading. Reading the Blue Guide, to which the new application guideline refers, is also recommended.
