Together with the tekom annual conference, the tcworld conference is the leading global event and marketplace for technical communication. Along with the tekom fair, it has reached a new record with 300 more participants compared to last year’s event. The program covered topics such as Intelligent Information and its importance for TC and other current trends.

The participants had the opportunity to choose among 250 expert presentations, workshops and tutorials held by 276 international speakers in English and German. The range of conference topics was also very broad at this year’s conference at the ICS in Stuttgart, not only covering classic topics in technical documentation, but also focusing on trends such as Intelligent Information, visualization and more.

During the presentations and workshops, the participants found answers to questions such as: What is "Intelligent Search" all about? How can "Intelligent Information" be realized? And, how can digital product communication become efficient?
The presentation slides of the speakers are available for download on the conference portal.

New Topics and Standards Developed by tekom

In addition, new tracks at this year’s conference were added to the classic topics of technical communication. For example, digital product communication: With digital media, technical communication advances into new dimensions – the right content strategy helps managing content consistently and cost-efficiently.

Furthermore, there were presentations on topics that tekom aims to promote. In this context, Dr. Michael Fritz (CEO of tekom Germany and tekom Europe) presented the concept of tekom-iiRDS (Intelligent Information Request and Delivery Standard). What is the meaning behind this term? Making user information available must be automatized so that this can take place individually and independent of context and be further integrated into concepts such as Industry 4.0 or the Internet of Things. To meet this target, a generally accepted standard must be found that still covers all branches. The tekom working group "Information 4.0" aims to fill this gap with tekom-iiRDS.

There were also some new developments related to guidelines in technical communication that were presented. One of the most hotly discussed issues is the question of whether product information can be delivered in electronic form and, if so, which kinds. As it is difficult to determine an adequate form of delivery and still ensure legal compliance, many companies hesitate to deliver information for use in electronic form. With "eDok", a team of 20 experts within tekom has developed a guideline covering the need for clarity in the question of appropriate delivery of product information in electronic form.

Awards and Social Events

Besides the diversified conference program and the likewise diversified and large fair, visitors benefited from the many opportunities in the meantime for networking and exchange with their peers.

At the tekom Welcome Party, participants celebrated the opening of the tcworld conference 2016 as well as the winners of the tekom docu award (honoring successful instruction manuals, online help tools and multimedia-based applications).

In the course of the international networking event, the tekom All Star Band celebrated its debut. The band consisted of experienced and proven stage musicians within the ranks of tekom. The musicians performed well, creating a wonderful atmosphere for the enthusiastic participants.

The conference was rounded off with more social events such as a visit to a brewery of craft beer, a guided tour of Stuttgart and the city of Esslingen, yoga sessions, and more.

The tekom fair: Cross-industrial and International

Besides visiting the conference, there was also enough time to take a look at the tekom fair, with 98 exhibitors from Germany and 67 with an international background, representing a variety of fields and industries.

The main focus at the tekom fair in the two halls was on authoring tools, technical documentation, visualization, cross-media publishing, localization and translation, management of product data, intelligent search, video creation, language technology, service management, editing and content management systems, and terminology.
In the 77 tool presentations, exhibitors presented software solutions and editing concepts.
Furthermore, many international organizations of the industry and trade associations – mostly in the field of translation – presented at the Associations World.
