Happy Birthday tekom Europe!
tekom Europe is celebrating its first birthday on November 5. On November 5, 2013, tekom Europe was founded by members from six tekom country groups along with tekom Germany and COM & TEC (Italy) as corporate members. Much has happened since the founding...
Election of Delegates
On its first birthday, tekom Europe can already highlight some successes: The election of delegates was held in February 2014. The assembly of delegates, 13 members strong, set the course for more projects and events by tekom Europe. One of these projects is the standardization of skills and competencies for the profession of technical communicator at the European level, where tekom Europe is actively involved.
New Country Organization
In March, tekom Europe had its first addition to the family. tekom Polska was founded, and a celebration took place during a translation and localization conference in Warsaw.
Activities of the Country Organizations
The country organizations regularly organized events in different formats and with different topics. The DITA workshop in France and a DITA topic day in Denmark were very well received by the audience. In Belgium, a terminology workshop was held, while in Romania, an event on the topic of graphic design and tools was on the agenda. An event focusing on the challenges of software localization was carried out in Austria.
In the year after the founding, the focus was primarily on the exploration of markets in the member countries and on establishing new contacts. In Turkey, tekom Europe organized a round table for representatives of the household appliances industry, a strong industrial sector in Turkey. The round table was held in cooperation with the German Foreign Chamber of Commerce (AHK). Valuable ideas for further cooperation were collected during the discussion about the development of technical communication in Turkey. The needs of technical communicators were identified as well as ways tekom Europe can support them.
Objective: To Promote tekom Europe
tekom Europe made its way through Europe in order to increase awareness of the association and to attract new members. During the tekom Europe Roadshow in the fall, eight European countries were visited. The conference series was titled "Technical Communication on the Move". Depending on the country, different conference programs were offered to participants. The Roadshow provided tekom Europe with valuable insight into the status quo of technical communication as such and into the community in the respective countries.
Exploring markets will again be very high up on tekom Europe’s activities agenda next year. Furthermore, tekom Europe will continue its efforts to work on the definition and establishment of the profession at the European level. tekom Europe aims to continuously expand its network, for example through the creation of new country organizations and the extension of the European university network.
